È nato in Norvegia e ha svolto vari lavori. Prima di debuttare come scrittore ha lavorato in una libreria, è stato traduttore e anche critico letterario. La sua prima raccolta letteraria (1987) si chiama Aske i munnen, sand i skoa.Con il romanzo Fuori a rubar cavalli, tradotto in 45 lingue, ha vinto diversi premi, tra cui il Norwegian Critics’ Prize for Literature (2003), il Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize (2003), l’Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (2006) e l’International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award (2007). Attualmente vive in una piccola fattoria nel Sudest della Norvegia e tra i suoi scrittori preferiti troviamo lo statunitense Raimond Carver e il norvegese Knut Hamsun.
