The prototype of the Renaissance "genius", Leonardo da Vinci is probably the most famous Italian artist in the world. But "artist" alone is not enough to describe him. He was not only a superb painter and draughtsman but also a scientist, student of anatomy and hydraulics, engineer, inventor of war machines and theatrical sets, musician and theoretician of the arts. He trained in Florence with Verrocchio, worked for the Medici, the Sforza and the King of France. He has left us an enormous mass of codexes and manuscripts, along with such priceless masterpieces of all times as the "Mona Lisa" and the "Last Supper".
