Something broke in childhood around 2011. The data are unambiguous: within a few years of smartphones reaching the majority of American teenagers, rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and loneliness began rising sharply — especially among girls. Sleep eroded. Attention fragmented. Boys retreated into gaming and pornography. Girls disappeared into mirrors made of likes and follower counts. In The Lost Body, philosopher Adriano Solera argues that the crisis is deeper than screen time. It is a crisis of habitat. Human development evolved through embodied, face-to-face, risk-laden, boredom-tolerant, community-embedded life. In less than four years, smartphones replaced that habitat with an engineered environment optimized not for flourishing but for attention capture. Drawing on developmental neuroscience, large national surveys, the work of Jean Twenge, Jonathan Haidt, Peter Gray, and Viktor Frankl, and the testimony of parents, clinicians, and teachers, Solera traces the full arc of the damage: the collapse of free play; the neuroscience of why adolescence is the worst possible time for a device designed to exploit reward sensitivity; the specific harms to girls through social comparison; the quieter retreat of boys into virtual worlds; the epidemic of loneliness produced by contact without closeness. But The Lost Body is not only a diagnosis. It is a blueprint: what parents can do from toddlerhood through late adolescence, how schools that remove phones are recovering the attentional commons, and how to rebuild the conditions — free play, physical risk, real friendship, boredom, embodied presence — that make healthy development possible.
