In a letter of 20 February, 1749, Sir Benjamin Keene, Ambassador to Spain from the Court of Saint James, reported that he had once again been to the Madrid opera, in the famed Coliseo del Buen Retiro. "Nothing was ever half as magnificent as the theater," he wrote. Such was the environment in which the Spanish Court of the mid18th century enjoyed its musical life. But then we should not be surprised. For this was the time in Spain of Farinelli, by far the most celebrated castrato of his day, a time when the Queen's music teacher was Domenico Scarlatti, at a court into which would soon come another well-known Italian, Luigi Boccherini. - Grover Wilkins
