Mostly Irreversible

Every decision closes something. The moment you act, a set of possible futures stops being possible, and what has closed does not reopen. We live inside this arrangement continuously and almost never name it. Eugene Cherepanov argues that much of ordinary distress — fear of choosing wrong, decisions dragged out for months, guilt over outcomes nobody controlled, the persistent sense of not measuring up — grows out of how the world is built rather than out of personal weakness. The world cannot take everything into account at once. Information travels at a finite speed, consequences arrive late, context is always incomplete. Under those conditions error becomes the running cost of movement, and a life without mistakes would require a world that does not exist. The book works through this in five short parts. It opens with the groundwork: the finite reach of causation, the moment a possibility turns into a fact, irreversibility as the price of anything being real, and the past as a compressed record rather than an archive of roads not taken — which is why hindsight feels so damning while explaining so little. It then turns to the person inside that system: how much freedom is actually available (participation at the point where things settle, rather than access to every alternative), why choice always costs more than we want it to, and how error, regret, guilt and responsibility come apart from one another. Responsibility here means acknowledging your part in what became fixed; it does not require having controlled the outcome, and confusing the two serves nobody. From there the guide becomes practical. Four working rules run through the second half. Keep optionality — preserve future moves instead of spending them. Take risk you can survive, where a loss still leaves you in the game and a win is worth having. Fix decisions on time, neither before the information exists nor long after it has stopped arriving. Move in small irreversible steps that change your trajectory without breaking the system that carries you. Each rule is developed through examples from medicine, clinical research and project management, fields where mistakes are expensive and nothing can be taken back. The closing parts take on what most guides leave out: identity built on accepting a past you cannot edit, why finishing is harder than starting and why completion is what gives work its weight, and how to think about endings — including the last one — without dramatizing them and without looking away. The book promises no optimized life and offers no method for getting decisions right every time. It gives an accurate picture of the constraints and a set of moves that work inside them.
