La baronessa Ruth Rendell è autrice di gialli, thrillers psicologici e murder mysteries, alcuni firmati con lo pseudonimo di Barbara Vine. Nata a Londra nel 1930, ha studiato al Loughton County High School, Essex.È Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature e ha ricevuto numerosi premi per il suo lavoro, tra cui il Crime Writers' Association Cartier Diamond Dagger (un riconoscimento alla carriera), e il Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence.È autrice di una serie di romanzi con protagonista il Detective Chief Inspector Wexford, che vive a Kingsmarkham, città inglese di fantasia.
