Didn’t mean my expectations but beautiful on its own
So, the story opens with these three thought-provoking questions: “What is a break? What is a fracture? What is a joint?”It's all centered around a young narrator who falls in love with a stranger, and as you might expect, it ends in tragedy.
Caleb’s writing style? Oh man, it's almost like poetry! There’s a rhythm to his words that makes the story flow in a way I haven’t really experienced with other authors. It feels *harmonious*, almost like music. And one thing that really stands out is how Caleb dives into heavy themes like racism, suffering, and isolation. The narrator is a person of color, and since Caleb himself is also a young man of color, you get this sense that maybe Caleb is pouring some of his own experiences into the story. It feels really personal, like you’re reading about his own love through the narrator.
The story is pretty fast-paced and packed with a lot of emotional depth. You can really feel the loss surrounding the narrator, especially with characters like his grandmother and grandfather. While the language helps bring out themes of love and intimacy, you definitely feel the weight of everything he's going through.
Now, I’ll be honest—when I picked this up, I was hoping for something similar to “A Little Life”, but it didn’t quite hit that mark for me. Still, on its own, the story holds up well, and the ending is pretty striking. All in all, it’s a solid read, even if it didn’t meet all of my expectations.
