Giornalista e scrittore statunitense. I genitori, William and Mary Bryson ebbero altri due figli, Michael e Mary Elizabeth. Iniziò gli studi presso la Drake University ma li abbandonò nel 1972 quando decise di girare per quattro mesi per l'Europa. Fece ritorno in Europa l'anno successivo, con il suo compagno di scuola Stephen Katz. Alcuni episodi di questo secondo viaggio vengono rispolverati in Una città o l'altra, che documenta un viaggio simile intrapreso da Bryson vent'anni dopo.Nel 1975 la coppia tornò negli Stati Uniti dove Bryson terminò gli studi.
