Propr. James Melvin Lunceford. Direttore d'orchestra statunitense di jazz. La sua orchestra, che registrò già nel 1930, acquistò una fisionomia precisa a partire dal 1934, con l'ingresso del trombettista e arrangiatore Sy Oliver, e diede gli esiti più alti alla fine del decennio come una delle maggiori espressioni dell'era Swing, per la perfetta e spettacolare coesione nei collettivi e l'apporto di solisti quali i sassofonisti Willie Smith e Joe Thomas o il trombonista-cantante Trummy Young, sebbene l'arrangiamento avesse in genere la prevalenza sui singoli. L. si caratterizzò per l'impiego del tempo due quarti, in contrasto col quattro quarti dell'orchestra di Basie; dovette il successo in buona parte ai coretti vocali, raffinati e venati d'ironia.
