Rogue Performances recovers eighteenth and nineteenth-century American culture s fascination with outcast and rebellious characters. Peter Reed also explores ways these characters helped to popularize theatrical forms such as ballad opera, patriotic spectacle, blackface minstrelsy, and melodrama.
