(Akyab, Birmania, 1870 - Beaumont-Hamel, Francia, 1916) scrittore inglese. Considerato un maestro del racconto breve, pubblicò numerose raccolte, come Reginald (1904); Le cronache di Clovis (The chronicles of Clovis, 1912); Bestie e superbestie (Beasts and super-beasts, 1914). Scrisse un solo, breve, estroso romanzo tragicomico: L’insopportabile Bassington (The unbearable Bassington, 1912). Alcuni dei suoi racconti, dosatissimi negli effetti e nel linguaggio, sono minuscoli capolavori dell’orrore: in essi lo scrittore mette in luce con straordinaria economia di mezzi la crudeltà dell’uomo, e spesso anche quella dei bambini. S. morì combattendo sul fronte francese.
