The Threads

The internationally-bestselling, beloved author returns with another page-turning novel about love through the generations, family secrets, and one very special house. In Harriet Evans’s gorgeous The Treasures, we were introduced to Alice and Tom, two wayward souls who find each other through both happenstance and fate, and whose stories travel through some of the most significant events of the mid-twentieth century. Now, in this immersive and transporting follow-up, we continue this multigenerational tale through comedies, tragedies, love affairs, and devastating turns of fate. The novel opens on the day of the Royal Wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981 at a time of flux for the UK and for the characters. Alice and Tom are married and living at Sevenstones, the old home that acts as both backdrop and catalyst to this story, and we discover immediately that they have three kids now—Emma, known as Kick, who is twelve, and Rosie and Dan, who are five and three. But beyond mere family details, we learn that much has changed for Alice and Tom—for good and for bad—and they will find themselves navigating a changing and challenging world, politically, romantically, and much more. Harriet Evans brings her usual blend of stunning prose, incisive cultural insight, and poignant observations on love and family to a saga that will keep you turning the pages and thinking anew about your own life’s trajectory. This is yet another stunning entry in this internationally-bestselling author’s unforgettable, powerful body of work.
