The Two Piano Quartets
Dvorák was born in the village of Nelahozeves, Czechoslovakia on September 8, 1841, the son of a poor but popular innkeeper and village butcher. His early music training was from the local schoolmaster. At the age of 13 he was sent to the larger town of Zlonice to study primarily German, but this also offered him the chance for more advanced musical studies because his German instructor, Antonín Liehmann, was also the church organist. Leihmann, who was impressed with the abilities of Dvorák on the violin, viola and the keyboards, persuaded Dvorák's father, Frantisek, to instigate his son's formal musical education with the financial assistance of Dvorák's uncle. In 1857 Dvorák entered The Prague Organ School where he recieved a thorough training in church music. - Ann-Marie Barker
