1842, Londra

Compositore inglese. Dopo gli studi al conservatorio di Lipsia (1858-61), si stabilì a Londra, dove si mise in luce come compositore di operette (tratte dai modelli viennesi di J. Strauss jr. e parigini di Offenbach), al cui successo fu determinante l'apporto librettistico dell'umorista W.S. Gilbert. Rappresentate anche negli Stati Uniti – dove divennero popolarissime H.M.F. Pinafore (1878), Iolanthe (1882) e Il Mikado (1885) – esse influenzarono notevolmente il nuovo musical americano.
