Not every "video nasty" was tried in court. Under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959, magistrates could order seized tapes forfeited and destroyed without a criminal trial or a named defendant — a faster, lower-bar process that accounts for the largest share of titles the Director of Public Prosecutions' office ever acted against during Britain's 1983–1985 video nasty panic.
