John Cheever è considerato uno dei maestri della short story.A dirlo sono scrittori del calibro di Ernest Hemingway, John Updike, Rick Moody, Dave Eggers, David Foster Wallace. Cheever è autore di sette raccolte di racconti e di cinque romanzi. Nel 1958 il suo primo romanzo The Wapshot Chronicle (pubblicato nel 2004 da Fandango con il titolo Gli Wapshot) riceve il National Book Award. Nel 1965 Lo scandalo Wapshot, pubblicato da Fandango nel 2005, riceve la William Dean Howells Gold Medal per la fiction dalla National Academy of Arts and Letters. Una selezione di sessantuno racconti confluisce in The Stories of John Cheever (sono già uscite per Fandango le raccolte Il nuotatore, Ballata, Oh città dei sogni infranti!, Il rumore della pioggia a Roma, Racconti italiani)...
