WebAssembly for the Cloud is a practical engineering guide to using Wasm as the portable execution layer for cloud-native workloads. It starts from a single observation: WebAssembly is not a browser technology that found a second home in the cloud; it is a universal binary format whose security, density, and startup characteristics make it a better fit for many cloud workloads than the containers that dominate today. The book walks through the full stack — the case for Wasm in the cloud, the fundamental module and memory model, the WASI capabilities standard, the runtime landscape from Wasmtime to WasmEdge, the compilation toolchains from Rust and Go and AssemblyScript, the sandbox and security model, serverless platforms like Cloudflare Workers and Fermyon and Spin, edge computing patterns, plugin and extensibility architectures in Envoy and Istio, data pipeline transformations, observability integration with OpenTelemetry, deployment and operational tooling, and performance engineering. It covers the failure modes that quietly wreck Wasm workloads: a runtime that falls back to interpreted execution and degrades throughput, a dependency that drags a large runtime into the binary, a plugin that exhausts the memory budget and takes down the host, an AOT compilation step that stalls the deployment pipeline, a capability model that is too permissive because the host lazily grants access, a component-model change that breaks upstream/downstream compatibility. Each is presented with the failure, the countermeasure, and the operational tradeoff. Fourteen chapters. Real Rust, WIT, Spin, and Kubernetes code. Written for engineers building the portable execution layer that cloud platforms are converging on.
