For over 53 years of ministry, I've watched people—good people, sincere people—settle for religious substitutes instead of the real presence and power of God. They've got Dagon when they could have the Ark. They've got religion when they could have a relationship. They've got form when they could have power. This three-book series is born from a burden I've carried for decades: Too many believers are settling for a stump when God offers them so much more. In this first book, we're going to explore what happens when our false gods fall down—when the substitutes we've trusted prove powerless, when our religious activities fail us, when we're finally ready to admit that what we've been serving isn't the real thing. Picture this: The Philistine priests enter the temple of Dagon at dawn, ready to perform their morning rituals. But something is terribly wrong. Their god—the mighty fish-god Dagon, half man and half fish—is lying face-down on the ground before the Ark of the God of Israel. This scene from 1 Samuel 5 contains one of the most powerful and often overlooked lessons in all of Scripture. The Philistines had captured the Ark of the Covenant in battle, thinking they had defeated Israel's God. They placed the Ark in Dagon's temple as a trophy, a symbol of their victory. But they were about to learn a hard truth: You cannot put the living God in a box, and you cannot make Him bow to your substitutes. The story gets even more dramatic. The priests set Dagon back up, but the next morning, Dagon had fallen again—this time with his head and hands cut off, leaving only the stump of his body.
