(Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, 1731 - East Dereham, Norfolk, 1800) poeta inglese. Soggetto a crisi depressive e a ossessioni di natura religiosa, visse ritirato in campagna. Oltre a otto satire in versi (1782) e a una ballata burlesca, John Gilpin (1782), scrisse gli Inni di Olney (Olney hymns, 1779), di ispirazione devota, e il poemetto in versi sciolti Il compito (The task, 1785). C. anticipò alcuni atteggiamenti della poesia romantica, per esempio, la meditazione di fronte agli aspetti più umili e quotidiani della natura. Solo a tratti dietro i suoi pacati modi espressivi s’intravedono i turbamenti della sua mente e la sua cupa visione della condizione umana: esemplare a tale proposito è la poesia Il naufrago (The castaway, 1800), il cui tema è la solitudine dell’uomo abbandonato...
