È nata ad Haiti ed è emigrata negli Stati Uniti all’età di dodici anni. Ha studiato Scrittura creativa, che ha poi insegnato alla New York University e a Miami. È autrice di romanzi, racconti e saggi, accolti con grande entusiasmo dal pubblico e dalla critica e insigniti di alcuni dei più prestigiosi premi letterari, tra cui l’American Book Award e, in Italia, il Super Flaiano per La fattoria delle ossa (2005), pubblicato da Piemme, così come Fratello, sto morendo (2008), una memoir commovente sull’emigrazione. Il profumo della rugiada all’alba (Piemme 2012) è stato premiato con lo Story Prize.
