The locals at The Clove and Hoof are convinced the stranger who appeared at Sunday service is a detective, investigating the unpopular Vicar of Larcombe, Ernest Pratt. But the next morning Pratt is found dead at the bottom of a cliff and the stranger has disappeared. A spate of anonymous letters painted in blue watercolour arrive, household items go missing and odd pranks are played. Things take a more sinister turn when more deaths occur; the only connection between the victims seems to be they all frequented the village pub.
