The Christianisation of the Roman world lies at the root of modern Europe, yet at the time it was a tentative and piecemeal process. Peter Brown's fascinating study examines the factors which proved decisive and the compromises which made the emergence of the Christian 'thought world' possible: how the the old gods of the Roman Empire could be reinterpreted as symbols to further the message of the Church. Peter Brown also shows how Christian holy men were less representative of a triumphant faith than negotiators of a working compromise between the new faith and traditional ways of dealing with the supernatural worlds.

Professore alla Princeton University.Formatosi ad Oxford, Brown è stato per diversi anni lecturer e poi reader di Storia tardo-romana e bizantina della prestigiosa università britannica. Divenuto professore nel 1975 di "History and Classics" al Royal College dell'Università di Londra, tre anni più tardi era chiamato ad insegnare negli Stati Uniti, prima a Berkeley e infine a Princeton.Viene unanimemente considerato uno dei massimi storici di scuola anglo-americana. In Italia sono stati pubblicatito: "Il mondo tardo antico. Da Marco Aurelio a Maometto" (1974), "Religione e società nell'età di sant'Agostino" (1975), "Il culto dei santi.
