Clarinettista e direttore d'orchestra jazz statunitense. Dopo aver fatto parte, nel 1926, dell'orchestra di Ben Pollack e suonato con i musicisti bianchi di Chicago, fondò nel 1934 una sua grande orchestra con la quale, dall'estate 1935, ottenne uno straordinario successo che gli valse l'appellativo di «re dello swing». Utilizzando gli arrangiamenti di Fletcher Henderson e modellando la propria orchestra sulla sua, G. diffuse e rese popolare il jazz presso il pubblico più vasto, anche se non raggiunse l'intensità di formazioni nere come quella di Count Basie. Suo merito è stato anche di aver presentato per primo in pubblico gruppi «misti», cioè con musicisti afroamericani quali Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton (che con Gene Krupa formarono il suo celebre quartetto) e Charlie Christian.
