Howard Phillips Lovecraft è stato uno scrittore statunitense. Influenzato da Poe e dalla tradizione «gotica», pubblicò su riviste specializzate le sue storie di orrore e di fantascienza, raccolte in volume soltanto dopo la morte, quando fu finalmente annoverato tra i geniali creatori del «fantastico» contemporaneo. Il richiamo di Chthulhu (The call of Chthulhu, 1929) è il più famoso di una serie di racconti in cui compaiono i Grandi Anziani, divinità preistoriche in grado di superare le barriere spazio-temporali, mentre La casa delle streghe (The dreams in the witch house, 1932) narra la storia di uno studente di fisica quantica che dalla propria stanza s’inoltra negli abissi di un’America visionaria.
