This book offers a fresh analysis of constitutional, economic, demographic and cultural developments in the overseas territories of Britain, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Ranging from Greenland to Gibraltar, the Falklands to the Faroes, and encompassing islands in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and the Caribbean, these territories command attention because of their unique status, and for the ways that they occasionally become flashpoints for rival international claims, dubious financial activities, illegal migration and clashes between metropolitan and local mores. Connell and Aldrich argue that a negotiated dependency brings greater benefits to these territories than might independence.

Regista statunitense. Negli anni '40 è assistente di numerosi registi (J. Renoir, C. Chaplin, L. Milestone, M. LeRoy, R. Fleischer, W. Wellman, J. Losey, F. Zinnemann) e nel 1951 diviene produttore delegato dei film di B. Lancaster, che dirige in L'ultimo apache (1954), western antirazzista in cui – come nell'ironico Vera Cruz (1954) e nel parodistico Un bacio e una pistola (1955) – risaltano le caratteristiche del suo stile: inquadrature nette, ritmo veloce, prevalenza dell'azione e volontà di superare i generi tradizionali. Tratti d'autore che vengono confermati in Il grande coltello (1955), tragico ritratto di un attore schiacciato dal mondo del cinema, e in Prima linea (1956), acuto pamphlet antimilitarista. Nello stesso anno vince l'Orso d'oro al Festival di Berlino con Foglie d'autunno....
