Edgar Allan Poe

(Boston 1809 - Baltimora 1849) scrittore statunitense. La vita Figlio di attori girovaghi, fu accolto, a due anni, nella casa di un ricco mercante di Richmond, John Allan, che lo allevò senza adottarlo legalmente. Il difficile rapporto con questa figura paterna sostitutiva inasprì in P. il trauma dell’abbandono del padre e quello della morte precoce della madre, la cui immagine si fissò ossessivamente nella sua memoria inconscia. Nel 1815, in Inghilterra con gli Allan, iniziò gli studi, continuati al ritorno, nel 1820, prima a Richmond, poi, per breve tempo, all’università della Virginia.
