John Williams

1932, New York

Propr. J. Towner W. Compositore statunitense. Studente di musica all'Università della California e alla Juilliard School di New York, nel 1956 viene assunto come pianista dalla Columbia Pictures e si innamora delle musiche da film. Debutta come autore di colonne sonore alla fine degli anni '50 e vince il primo Oscar nel 1971 per Il violinista sul tetto di N. Jewison. Compositore di fiducia di S. Spielberg, da Sugarland Express (1974) a La guerra dei mondi e Munich (entrambi del 2005), si aggiudica l'Oscar con le partiture di Lo squalo (1975), E.T. l'extra-terrestre (1982), e Schindler's List (1993). Famoso per la maestosità delle sue composizioni e l'uso di grandi orchestre, soprattutto la London Symphony, punta molto sull'utilizzo di leitmotiv, talmente caratterizzati da diventare indipendenti...

Anne Sophie Mutter

1963, Rheinfelden

Violinista tedesca. Vincitrice a sette anni del premio «Jugend musiziert», nel 1976 fu chiamata da Karajan al festival di Salisburgo; da allora ha suonato con le maggiori orchestre del mondo ed è stata attiva anche in campo cameristico. Dall'86 insegna alla Royal Academy of Music di Londra.

1842, Vienna

Orchestra sinfonica fondata a Vienna nel 1842 per iniziativa di un gruppo di intellettuali, fra cui il poeta Nikolaus von Lenau e il direttore d'orchestra Otto Nicolai, che ne diresse i primi concerti alla Redoutensaal. Formata in un primo tempo da professionisti appartenenti alle orchestre teatrali della città, iniziò a tenere stabilmente stagioni di concerti a partire dal 1860, dapprima nel Teatro di Porta Carinzia, poi nella sala del Musikverein. Fra i suoi primi direttori permanenti vanno ricordati Otto Dessoff (1860-75), H. Richter (1875-98) e G. Mahler (1989-1901), che ampliarono progressivamente il tradizionale repertorio classico includendovi musiche di Brahms, Liszt, Wagner, Bruckner, Dvoák. In seguito fu diretta da F.
