I brani scelti sono stati sequenziati in ordine cronologico per seguire uno dei periodi più creativi della carriera di Joni Mitchell.
La collezione rivela diversi brani inediti, come “Jesus” registrato nell’appartamento della sua amica Jane Lurie a New York, che è stato ambientazione anche del brano “Chelsea Morning”.
Sono contenute anche le performance dal vivo della Mitchell al Le Hibou Coffee House di Londra il 29 ottobre 1970, trasmesso dalla BBC.
Incluse anche diverse canzoni che sarebbero state destinate alla pubblicazione dell’album Blue l’anno successivo come “Carey”, “River” e “My Old Man”.
Contenuta anche la performance del cantautore James Taylor e Mitchell che si è svolta durante la seconda parte dello spettacolo.
All’interno della collezione anche il debutto della Mitchell al Carnegie Hall registrato il 1° febbraio 1969, alcuni mesi prima dell’uscita del suo secondo album Clouds, che le ha permesso di vincere il 9° Grammy Awards.
Il cofanetto contiene un booklet con molte foto inedite estratte dalla collezione personale di Joni e le note con le sue conversazioni insieme allo scrittore Cameron Crowe.
ARCHIVES VOL. 2 fa da compagno al cofanetto The Reprise Albums (1968-1971) che include le versioni nuovamente rimasterizzate di Blue (1971) e i tre album precedenti: Song To A Seagull (1968), Clouds (1969) e Ladies Of The Canyon (1970).
