Suo padre, imprenditore tessile, morì quando lui aveva nove anni. A diciassette anni entrò alla McGill University dove formò i Buckskin Boys e scrisse il primo libro di poesie, Let Us Compare Mythologies (tradotto in Itala con il titolo Confrontiamo allora i nostri miti). Il suo secondo volume, pubblicato nel 1961 e intitolato The Spice Box of Earth, fu apprezzato in tutto il mondo. Ma come è sempre accaduto nella sua carriera, l'enorme riconoscimento ricevuto dalla sua opera non trovò un corrispettivo dal punto di vista economico. "Non riuscivo a guadagnarmi da vivere", ha detto.Da quasi cinquant’anni Leonard Cohen incanta il mondo con le sue canzoni con le sue poesie di ribellione e d’amore, perennemente in bilico tra la vita e l’immaginazione....
