Attento osservatore della vita popolare londinese, la descrisse nelle satire, nelle cronache in prosa (I sette peccati mortali di Londra, The seven deadly sins of London, 1606) e soprattutto nelle commedie: La festa dei calzolai (The shoemaker’s holiday, 1600), le cui note realistiche preannunciano Defoe, Il vecchio Fortunato (Old Fortunatus, 1600) e L’onesta cortigiana (The honest whore, 1604). Collaborò inoltre con altri drammaturghi dell’epoca elisabettiana, come Th. Middleton e J. Webster.
