In "A Selection from the Lyrical Poems of Robert Herrick," the reader is invited to traverse a rich tapestry of 17th-century English lyric poetry, characterized by its vivid imagery, musicality, and exploration of themes such as love, nature, and the fleeting nature of time. Herrick's work is imbued with the pastoral elegance of his rural upbringing and the intellectual influences of the Metaphysical poets. His use of rhyme and meter, along with a playful yet contemplative tone, positions his lyrical expressions within a broader context of the English Renaissance, allowing for an appreciation of both the simplicity and complexity of human emotions. Robert Herrick, a vicar by trade, was significantly influenced by both his academic background and the tumultuous socio-political landscape of his time. His experiences in the court of Charles I, as well as his later exile during the Puritan Commonwealth, deeply informed his poetic sensibilities. Herrick's dedication to capturing the ephemeral moments of life reflects his desire to affirm beauty in a world marked by uncertainty, highlighting his commitment to craftsmanship and thematic depth. This selection serves as an essential introduction to Herrick's work for readers seeking to engage with the nuances of lyrical poetry. It invites contemporary audiences to reflect on universal themes that resonate through time, making Herrick's verse both timeless and relevant. For those who appreciate finely crafted poetry that reveals the duality of human experience, Herrick's lyrical selections are an invaluable addition to any literary collection. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A comprehensive Introduction outlines these selected works' unifying features, themes, or stylistic evolutions. - The Author Biography highlights personal milestones and literary influences that shape the entire body of writing.

Robert Herrick

(Londra 1591 - Dean Prior, Devonshire, 1674) poeta inglese. Sacerdote anglicano, fu dal 1629 vicario di Dean Prior; fu allontanato dall’incarico durante la dittatura di Cromwell (1647) e poi reintegrato dopo la restaurazione. Scrisse poesie profane e religiose, raccolte in Esperidi e nobili rime (Hesperides and noble numbers, 1648).
