Imagine living in a world without books. Hard to picture, right? Well, that’s exactly the kind of world you’ll experience in this story. The protagonist is a fireman, but not the kind you’re thinking of. In this universe, firemen don’t put out fires—they start them. And their primary target? Books. Yep, they burn books for a living. It’s all part of a government plan to keep people “safe” from the dangerous ideas books contain, ideas that make people think too much, question too much, or escape into fantasy. Basically, books are the enemy. The story takes a turn when our fireman starts getting curious. He finds himself drawn to the very thing he’s supposed to destroy—reading. And as he falls in love with the words on the page, he knows he’s risking everything. His own friends, fellow firemen, will be the ones to torch his house once they discover his secret. But he’s willing to take that chance. It’s tough to talk too much without giving the whole plot away, but if you’re curious about a world where books are forbidden (and what someone does when they discover the power of reading), this one’s definitely worth your time. Especially if you’re holding a book right now—feels a bit ironic, doesn’t it?
Fahrenheit 451
The hauntingly prophetic classic novel set in a not-too-distant future where books are burned by a special task force of firemen. Over 1 million copies sold in the UK. Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to burn books, which are forbidden, being the source of all discord and unhappiness. Even so, Montag is unhappy; there is discord in his marriage. Are books hidden in his house? The Mechanical Hound of the Fire Department, armed with a lethal hypodermic, escorted by helicopters, is ready to track down those dissidents who defy society to preserve and read books. The classic novel of a post-literate future, 'Fahrenheit 451' stands alongside Orwell's '1984' and Huxley's 'Brave New World' as a prophetic account of Western civilization's enslavement by the media, drugs and conformity. Bradbury's powerful and poetic prose combines with uncanny insight into the potential of technology to create a novel which over fifty years from first publication, still has the power to dazzle and shock.
