James Fenimore Cooper

(Burlington, New Jersey, 1789 - Cooperstown, New York, 1851) scrittore statunitense. Le impressioni infantili del paesaggio di frontiera, dove crebbe, e la giovanile esperienza del mare, intrapresa dopo l’espulsione da Yale, modellarono la sua immaginazione di romanziere, creatore di nuovi miti per un nuovo mondo. Nel 1811, sposatosi con l’aristocratica Susan De Lancey, si stabilì nelle proprietà di famiglia; a trent’anni scrisse quasi per sfida il primo, incerto romanzo, Precauzione (Precaution, 1820); il grande successo dei due seguenti, La spia (The spy, 1821) e I pionieri (The pioneers, 1823), lo indusse a trasferirsi prima a New York per seguire la carriera letteraria, e poi in Europa, dove conobbe W.
