The characteristics of the construction of the Basilica of Saint Peter which we know nowadays - the one rebuilt during the Renaissance, where the old Early Christian basilica used to be - follow a symbolic pattern that refers to the origins of Christianity and to the precepts of the Catholic reform. The element that characterises the «new Saint Peter's» in the first place is a new symbolism that has its focal point in the relationship between the central dome, the altar and the Saint's tomb. The connection between these three elements builds up the true vertical axis of the eschatological encounter between nature and supernature. This vertical axis crosses a horizontal one that stems from the square facing the basilica, surrounded by the columns. The symbolism of each chapel is in harmony with that of the other chapels. Nevertheless, it is in the mosaics that the basilica's message is extensively unraveled. We find mosaics on the central dome, in the side chapels, on the chapels' domes and in the altarpieces; hectares of tiles comprise the largest mosaic in the world. A mosaic art school, right next door to the basilica and flagship of the Fabbrica of Saint Peter, takes care of the maintenance of the mosaics. This book aims at taking the reader by the hand and guiding through the harmony and grandeur of these mosaics, by analysing the themes they portray. An iconographic reading is essential for the understanding of Saint Peter's space and images. The Chapel of the Baptism, for instance, portrays three scenes on its dome: the water baptism, the blood baptism (martyrdom) and the desire. This proves that, in the Christian tradition, the universal salvation of humanity was a fundamental theme. Each chapel, together with its dome and altarpiece, engages in its own dialogue within the history of the Church and of its doctrine.
